I’m the weirdo who looks down, sometimes covers my ears, and occasionally will run out of theaters during previews for movies I really care about 🤓. I was just proven right—again! I present two cases:
One Night Only was advertised as a disturbingly breezy and oblivious romcom set in a fascist hellscape. I mistakenly watched this preview, consequently had to be dragged to see it, and jokes on me because that movie freaking rocks.
The Materialists was presented as a boppy 90’s-era-like romcom, which does not match the tone one bit, and I have many friends who were disappointed as a result. You know who loved it? Me! Why? I didn’t see the trailer and had none of those expectations going in.
Not to mention all the spoilers in trailers: the best jokes, the biggest set pieces, the “surprise”cameos—often entire plots! What are we doing, people?!
There is one exception to this rule and that’s for indie movies that might get a distribution bump from a viral trailer… which I’ve seen happen 😁 but that’s a convo for another day.
